Shopping and Eating

We’re so lucky to be close to so much good food…. Take time to look past the big supermarket chains and sample the pleasures from small local food producers

Wedmore has a great range of excellent food and other shops:

  • Wedmore Village Stores – well supplied local store
  • Hectors Butcher – Traditional quality butchers with local deli range.
  • Crafty Fingers – Specialty craft beers. As if 3 pubs in the village wasn’t enough!
  • Pisces Fishmonger and Greengrocer
  • Gifted Company – gift shop
  • Post Office
  • plus many others…

Large supermarkets – the closest of these is in Wells where you will find Waitrose, Morrisons, Tesco and Lidl. Sainsbury’s is in Street or Cheddar (small one).

Wells has an excellent market on Weds and Saturdays with a wide range of foodie delicacies. At the moment the market square is closed to traffic, and the pubs, cafés and restaurants have spilled out on the square – good atmosphere, especially in Summer! Wells High Street has also got a great range of shops and stores. Don’t miss Wells Food Festival in October (26th Oct in 2026).

Glastonbury is a great place to vist. Look past the crystal shops (sorry – !), and there is an excellent range of cafes and restaurants. Earthfare on the High Street is lovely little supermarket with a great range of delicious sustainable foods (This is Glastonbury…).

Clarks Village in Street – Outside village mall, some 90 stores and food outlets.

  • The Bird, Westhay – Tel: 01458 784371, Traditional pub, busy with locals enjoying proper pub food! One of our go-to spots.

  • The White Horse, Mark – Traditional country pub. Pizza night on Wednesday! *** Good reviews from our guests
  • La Rocca, Cheddar – Italian restaurant. Book online or call 01934 743782 *** Also has good reviews
  • Wells – lots of choice. Loads of coffee shops, street food on market days (Weds and Sat). Quality restaurants – We like the Good Earth for lunch, (though it can get busy!) and also Goodfellows which is very fine dining. Also a good choice is Root, a Michelin listed, veg-led, sharing plates restaurant.
  • Glastonbury – an excellent range of lively pubs, cafes and restaurants. We like Fara on Benedict Street, but make sure you take the time to slow down and have something to eat or drink when you spend a few hours in Glasto.

More food delights:

  • Wookey Farm – Goats milk and range of cheeses. Goat meat, and other free range meat. Wookey, BA5 1DT, but go to their website for directions, your satnav may take you down a treacherous ford!
  • Middlewick Cafe, Glastonbury – Excellent and friendly café. Good to cycle there, or just great for Brunch. Good place for a walk up Glastonbury Tor, though can be a muddy route in winter.
  • Coombes Micro Dairy – Fresh full fat milk, range of other local foods, New Grove Farm, Blackford, BS28 4NH. @coombesmicrodairy on Facebook
  • Lands End Farm, Wilkins Cider – 500 yards down the lane to the east. Roger Wilkins is a legend – look him up on YouTube, and his cheeses (Stilton and Cheddar – Tasty, Extra and Unpasteurised. Extra is our favourite, but strong) are fantastic. Sit in the sun and try some of the cider as well.
